It’s not only cats and dogs that can contract Salmonella from contaminated pet food. Pet owners are at risk too. A recent report in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association documents how contaminated pet food has made people sick with Salmonella. And it offers good advice to pet owners about how to avoid the spread of the illness to those who handle pet food. Some of the tips: avoid feeding raw diets to pets; purchase individually packaged pig ear treats, rather than those from bulk bins; use a clean scoop to dispense pet food into bowls and not the bowls the animal eats from; and avoid feeding pets in the kitchen.
