Many people know about the dangers of West Nile Virus (WNV), which can be life-threatening and even fatal in people. Many also know that horses and some birds are susceptible to WNV with potentially fatal outcomes, as well, but did you know alligators are another species that can get WNV? In fact, WNV is actually a wildlife disease that cycles in birds and mosquitoes, and just happens to also affect people, horses and many other species. Regarding alligators, veterinarians and scientists put some key pieces of the puzzle together to prevent this life-threatening disease, with an added benefit of reduced economic losses from damages the disease causes in alligator skin.
