One Health Headlines: Friday, March 2, 2012

More reminders in the news this week that rabies, while far less prevalent in the United States than it was in the past, is still lurking and still a serious public health issue. Authorities in New Mexico announced that 32 dogs in the southeast part of the state have been euthanized since December due to rabies exposure, and in Tennessee, two horses have recently succumbed to the disease. A number of people have required post-exposure prophylaxis as a result. All of these deaths (with the possible exception of puppies too young to be fully vaccinated) could have been prevented with vaccination.
