Animals give so much to our lives in so many ways, but our close connections also bring risks. Zoonotic (pronounced “ZOO-oh-NOT-ick”) diseases are diseases that are spread from animals to humans. It is estimated that 75% of all emerging diseases are zoonotic.

Keeping an eye out for ticks

Last week, it was 87 degrees in Chicago. In March. On the second day of spring. Other cities around the country experienced unseasonably warm temperatures, too, and experts say that warmer weather means ticks will be coming out earlier this year.

Rabies in the news

I wrote about rabies here a few weeks ago, but it seems every day brings a new rabies story to my attention. Recently, 20 dogs were euthanized in Alamance County, N.C. after the discovery of the fourth rabies case in the county. The dogs had been in a fight with a raccoon; the dogs’ owner shot and killed the animal.
