Doggy geniuses?

Every dog owner likes to think their dog is smart, but how smart are they?  Scientific studies show they’re smarter than we used to think.  Research has shown that dogs can learn 165-250 words, signals or signs.  The scientists put dogs’ intellectuality on the level of a 2 to 2 ½ year old child.  Hmm…maybe when they’re whining they’re actually asking “why?”

Like human, like dog

Dogs share our lives and they also share some of our diseases…like cancer.   According to the U.S. National Cancer Institute, almost one million dogs develop cancer each year.  Many of these dogs are treated with the same medications or procedures that may be used to treat people with cancer. Comparative oncologists study cancer in animals and humans so we can all benefit from what they learn.

Studying the human-animal bond

We already know there are very few things better than a warm ‘welcome home’ from a happy, loving dog.  Or the comfort of a furry feline companion curled up next to you. The presence of a beloved pet can provide great benefit to a child’s development.  But that bond doesn’t only create ‘warm and fuzzy’ feelings – it can provide much-needed support for children with autism, physical handicaps, allergies or other health problems.  In order to learn more about the value of the human-animal bond’s effects, especially on children, the National Institutes of Health’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development is providing grant money for studies.

Veterinarians focusing on companion animals (dogs, cats, small mammals, etc.) diagnose health problems, vaccinate against disease, medicate animals, treat and dress injuries, perform surgery, and advise owners about various subjects like nutrition, behavior and breeding. More than 70 percent of veterinarians who work in private practice focus on treating companion animals.
