One Health Headlines: Friday, April 20, 2012

Once again, rabies dominated the One Health headlines this week, with Toronto reporting its first human case of rabies in 80 years. This is only the third such case in Canada in the last 12 years. Further testing has revealed the 41-year-old man most likely was infected while working in the Dominican Republic.

Researchers find cure for Type 1 diabetes in mice

University of Colorado researchers have found a cure for Type 1 diabetes in mice. The drug was able to prevent diabetes and even reverse the effects of the disease in mice that were already diabetic.

Time of day could have an effect on cardiac health

A new study on mice has found that the time of day could have an effect on a person’s risk of sudden cardiac death. Published in the journal Nature, the researchers from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine found that levels of a protein which controls the heart’s rhythm fluctuate through the day.
