Feral pigs in N.C. test positive for Brucella suis

In the past week, news surfaced that feral pigs in North Carolina have tested positive for Brucella suis, a bacteria that can be transmitted from feral pigs to humans, and from feral pigs to domestic pigs. About 9 percent of pigs in Johnson County and less than 1 percent of pigs tested at 13 other sites tested positive.

Raw milk linked to 7 cases of E. coli in Missouri

Raw milk has been in the news lately, related to outbreaks of disease in several states. The Missouri Department of Health just announced seven cases of E. coli infections in the state, likely related to raw milk consumption. The unpasteurized milk can contain harmful bacteria, as found in a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

One Health Headlines: Friday, April 6, 2012

Salmonella outbreaks were in the news this week. Three outbreaks were linked to pet turtles, which sickened 66 people in 16 states and the District of Columbia. The cause of another outbreak, which has sickened 93 people in 19 states and the District of Columbia, has yet to be determined, although officials are investigating a possible link to sushi and similar raw foods.
