Good hygiene necessary when it comes to baby poultry

The arrival of spring means that baby poultry start showing up in feed and pet stores around the country. The chicks may be cute — and children especially seem to love them — but they can also carry salmonella, even if they appear healthy. It’s especially important that children are supervised around chicks, and that everyone, regardless of age, follows basic protocols for good hygiene after touching or simply being around chicks or touching anything in the area where they live.

FSIS investigating Salmonella outbreak linked to raw poultry

After 278 illnesses were reported in 18 states, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is investigating an outbreak of Salmonella. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also partnered with state health departments to look into the outbreak that’s linked to raw chicken from Foster Farms plants. The products were sold mainly in California, Oregon, and Washington state.

Multistate Salmonella outbreaks linked to live poultry

Health departments in Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, and South Dakota have announced salmonella outbreaks related to live poultry. Twenty cases have been confirmed so far, and most of them — seven out of 20 total cases — are in New Mexico. (Minnesota reported three cases; Nebraska, six; and South Dakota, four.)
